About This Location

World-renowned as the ancient capital of the Incan Empire and the gateway to Macchu Picchu, Cusco is today home to a flourishing tourism industry. Spectacular examples of both pre-Hispanic and colonial architecture sit alongside hastily constructed infrastructure built to accommodate a steadily increasing flow of international visitors.

Why You Should Come

The largely indigenous population of Cusco and its surrounding communities continue to live in extreme poverty. In the rural mountainside pueblos, roads are often unpaved and unsafe, schools are stocked with only the most basic teaching supplies, and the nearest hospital may be up to two hours away by car. Like the rural communities, we serve in Ecuador, residents of Cusco and its surrounding territory strongly identify with the indigenous Quechua culture, and the economy relies heavily on agriculture. Heavy rains and earthquakes frequently produce further hardships, as evidenced by the January 2010 flooding, which wiped out roads, utility grids, and structures alike. Not spared from the destruction were many of the area's few medical clinics.

How You Can Help

Since 2009, MEDLIFE has served the Cusco region through Mobile Clinics and MEDLIFE Fund Projects. MEDLIFE is currently working toward the construction of a new medical clinic to replace those lost due to environmental damage.

At the moment there are only Mobile Clinics available for this destination. The clinic will provide basic health services, and also serve as an opportunity to learn more about community needs and make plans for long-term development projects.
